Honduras

The coffee produced by the small agricultural cooperative COMSA (Cafe Organico Marcala S.A.) is certified organic in Honduras and in Europe. It is one of the most experienced cooperatives in the whole of Honduras. The organisation was founded by 69 indigenous small-scale groups in 2001.

In order to change the prevailing production method, which barely covered production costs, the switch from conventional to organic production was made. After initial difficulties caused by the changeover and the resulting decline in production, COMSA members were trained in the knowledge and practices of different technologies for organic planting. This included measures such as better family involvement, increasing yields, and protecting soil, water, flora and fauna.

The organisation has now grown to over 600 members and produces with the certification marks of Fairtrade, Biolatina, DOP Marcala (protected region of origin) and UTZ (sustainability)
